Packing tips
Our professional packers can help you with as much packing or unpacking as you choose. We can also offer you boxes, as well as special cartons such as book cartons and wardrobe boxes. If you prefer to pack your belongings yourself, keep these tips in mind.
- Keep packing supplies ready: boxes, packing tape, paper, bubble wrap, scissors, labels, marking pen.
- It's important to choose the right box. Pack heavy items like books in smaller boxes. Try to keep the weight of a box under 50 pounds.
- Are there items you need immediately at the new home or office? Pack them separately in a box and have it loaded last on the truck.
- Pack one room at a time. This helps break your task into manageable parts, and also keeps boxes separated by room.
- Keep things from each room together. For example, if all home office items are together, it will be easier to set up the home office when the boxes are delivered.
- Large, detailed labels on the tops and sides of boxes are very important. Label boxes "Fragile" if items are breakable. Draw arrows indicating which end must be up.
- Tape the bottom of the box with packing tape. After packing, seal the top of the box.
- Place heavy items on the bottom of the box, and lighter items on top. Fill all boxes to the top without overfilling them, and use towels or articles of clothing to fill empty spaces.
- Put breakable and non-breakable items in separate boxes. Wrap breakables and valuable objects in layers of paper to cushion them well.
- Wrap plates in paper and place them vertically, side by side. Wrap glasses and stemware in paper and store upright in boxes.
- Ideally, computers and electronics should be packed in their original cartons. If those are not available, wrap them in several layers of paper or bubble wrap and put them in the sturdiest boxes you can find.
