Moving Ahead: Let's Plan

Moving can be stressful. That's why we're there to help you get through it with the least amount of trouble. Here are some helpful tips that can help you pull off a successful move.

Planning tips

• Call RJW Moving 4-6 weeks ahead to schedule your move.
• Decide which items you want to give away or sell in a yard sale.
• Check your homeowner's insurance policies to see if moving is covered.
• We can provide you with cartons and packaging materials. Or you can start to collect cartons a month or two before you move.
• Learn which items can be transported. Some materials cannot be transported legally by movers, such as houseplants and animals, as well as flammable, corrosive and explosive items. Use these up, give them away, or call your waste management center or the EPA to find out how to dispose of them safely.
• Try to use up as much of your food and perishable items as possible.
• Arrange for disconnection of appliances and utilities at the old house and the connection of utilities in your new home.
• To speed up the moving in process, draw up a floor plan of the new home and indicate where furniture and boxes should go.
• Set aside valuables and important papers. Transport them yourself in your car, if possible.
• The day before the move, put cleaning supplies aside in a separate box. You'll need them to clean up after the move is complete, as well as in the new house.
• On the day of the move, you'll need to be on hand all day to supervise packing, answer any questions, confirm the new address, etc.
